Cassandra Alexandra (カサンドラ・アレクサンドル, Kasandora Arekusandoru) is the younger sister of Sophitia Alexandra, making her first appearance in Soulcalibur II, and again in Soulcalibur III & Soulcalibur IV. Cassandra's main goal is to relieve her sister from the burden of the Soul Edge and the oracles of the blacksmith god Hephaestus.

Cassandra has been mentioned as early as Sophitia's Soul Edge profile, though her name was mistranslated as Kathandra. She's also briefly mentioned on Sophitia's Soulcalibur profile as well, both witnessing Taki bringing her unconscious sister home and going with Sophitia to a shopping trip, in which Sophitia met her husband Rothion.

Besides her appearances in the fighting sagas, she has made a cameo appearance in Smash Court Tennis Pro Tournament 2 as an unlockable character.

Cassandra stole them to use in her travels, and they were cracked during her visit to a town filled with evil energy.

[edit] Story

Courage is better than the keenest steel, when bold men bare their hands; - "Poetic Edda: Fafnismal"

Cassandra's first appearance occurred in the third game of the saga, Soulcalibur II. Originally Cassandra replaced Sophitia entirely from the game's roster, taking her spot and similar movestyle. Despite this, Sophitia was later added to the list of characters on the home versions of Soulcalibur II, placing both sisters together as selectable characters. Cassandra carries two homages to past Namco games: One of her unlockable weapons is the Red Crystal Rod, which comes from Namco's Tower of Druaga and its sequels; and her third costume is modeled after Valkyrie, the heroine from Namco's Valkyrie no Densetsu.

As stated in Cassandra's profiles, four years after the events on Soulcalibur, Cassandra visits Sophitia's home, only to be greeted by the sight of Sophitia's two children fighting over a metal shard of Soul Edge that Sophitia's husband, Rothion, had found. Angered by her sister's panicked reaction, Cassandra ran to the Eurydice Shrine, screaming at Hephaestus for endangering her sister on behalf of his ego. After briefly passing out from exhaustion, she saw the metal fragment resonating with the holy Omega Sword, the sword her sister used on her past journey. Not wanting to see her sister take on another dangerous quest, especially now that she has a family, Cassandra stole the sacred sword and, sneaking out of her home, she took the task of destroying Soul Edge.

[edit] Ending

Using weapons once dedicated to Hephaestus, Cassandra destroyed the evil. Her sister's weapons bore the scars of numerous battles. She was so concerned about this that she forgot she destroyed the demonic blade. She did not need to worry because her sister would be overjoyed at her return.

Her ending description clearly states: "She chooses her path like a free bird. If the love for her family is power, then no one is stronger."

Cassandra returned in the fourth installment of the saga, Soulcalibur III, as a starting character. She remained largely the same, with slight upgrades on her fighting style that sets her apart from Sophitia, and new costumes.

Her profile follows her travels towards the east, where she finds a town covered in evil energy. Trying to help the habitants, much like Sophitia did in her last trip, Cassandra tracks the core of the evil in a castle atop the mountains. However, she discovers the sacred weapons she carried to have cracks all over. Forced to flee the city after being surrounded by the corrupted city-folks, she travels back to Greece to ask her brother-in-law, Rothion, to forge her new weapons. Once there, she was informed by Rothion that Sophitia left to destroy Soul Edge on her own. After receiving a new pair of weapons from Rothion, Cassandra sets out to search and join her sister in this quest.

[edit] Ending

Cassandra leaps into the air, sword in hand and hits the demonic sword. The sword shatters and she is thrown backwards by the force of its explosion. She looks up and realises her sword is shattered as well...

[edit] Input Ending

Again, the game then loads a sacred shrine scenario. Just as she is about to place the sword on the altar, her sister, Sophitia, calls her. She hurriedly puts the sword behind her back. She turns and walks down to talk to her sister. Just then the tip of the sword falls. Cassandra tries to explain. The game loads to a forge. She is seen hammering down on the sword, crying. She holds it up to see if it is fixed. It falls apart. "I don't know how to fix it!", she cries.

[edit] Non-Input Ending

The game then loads a sacred shrine scenario, as Cassandra is trying to place the still-broken sword in an altar. Cassandra lays down the sword as Sophitia appears on the scene and calls her. Both then leave, as the sword falls down in two pieces behind them.

Cassandra again set out for the town she had previously visited in Eastern Europe, hoping to find more clues that would lead her to Soul Edge. But as she hurried through the night, a man appeared before her. His eyes were stained red; she was reminded about a story she had heard about a swordsman who had led the mad townsfolk.

"You have a piece of Soul Edge, don't you?, I can feel it," the man said, and in an instant he was upon her. After a hard fight, she was finally able to land a blow on her assailant, but he only sneered at her.

"So, woman, you can ward off evil, though not as strong as the Holy Stone. Interesting. I'll let you live for now." A laugh echoed around her.

"I already have what I came for." Panicked, Cassandra searched her tunic, but the fragment of the cursed sword was gone.

Unnerved at first, Cassandra pushed those unhelpful feelings down and headed for the town, where she discovered some of the townsfolk still retained their sanity. In fact, they had been healed by a shining blue crystal. Could it be the Holy Stone the swordsman had mentioned? She set out to learn more, and then a rumor caught her attention: A man carrying a mass of crystal as tall as him was on his way to Ostrheinsburg.

If the crystal he bore had the power to smite evil, then that could only mean some evil presence lurked in the ruined castle there. Was it Soul Edge? Cassandra decided to follow the man to Ostrheinsburg and find out.

Soul Calibur IV Cassandra fighting Mitsurugi

After defeating Algol, Cassandra makes him drop the Soul swords. She runs up to Soul Calibur and thrusts it into Soul Edge. For a moment, nothing happens, then Soul Calibur says a perfect world will now be born. "The evil presence?" Cassandra asks. "Well there's still one left, right here!" Then she starts to try and break Soul Calibur. Soul Calibur calls her a foolish girl for trying to destroy the light of humanity just to suit herself. Cassandra replies, "After what you've done to Sophitia, you call yourself the light of humanity? Get serious!". Soul Calibur breaks.

The screen then fades to white. She then says, "Lets go home, Sophitia".

[edit] Trivia

  • Cassandra's Joke Weapon in Soulcalibur III is 'Broken Sword'. This sword is the sword Cassandra tries to fix in her ending.
  • The Soul of Cassandra discipline is available to created characters of the Sage class in Soulcalibur III.
  • Her Destined Battle in Soulcalibur II is Charade, and her destined Battle in Soulcalibur III is Raphael.
  • In her Story Mode in Soulcalibur IV, Cassandra encounters Rock after she defeats Raphael and his three servants in the first stage. The two of them work together on defeating Astaroth in her second stage, but then Rock leaves Cassandra after the third stage for personal goals. In Rock's Story Mode, Cassandra does the same thing with the encounter and the departure in the exact same stages. When Cassandra fights Sophitia in the fourth stage, her sister is wielding Soul Edge in the form of a sword and shield. Also, Sophitia's outfit is dark red, and her hair is darker. This might hint that she has become a new host for the evil sword. It's unknown if Sophitia did this to herself on her own, or if Tira manipulated her into this.
  • To explain the new features of Soulcalibur IV, Namco released an omake manga, in which Cassandra "taught" new character Hilde about the game's new features. (Soul Calibur 4 Omake (archive)(Japanese), English translation(English))
  • Cassandra and Sophitia are different is some ways. Since Sophitia is, or at least used to be, very loyal to Hephaestus, she can hear him and she relies on his power. Cassandra, however, is not humble, and she relies on her own strength, and Raphael even comments that she has the power to dispel evil. Also, Cassandra seems to not be hesitant like Sophitia. In her Soulcalibur IV ending, Cassandra destroys Soul Edge using Soul Calibur without any hesitation. In Sophitia's ending, Sophitia hesitates in destroying Soul Calibur, so Soul Edge tries to eat her first.
  • Although Cassandra does defeat Algol in her Soulcalibur IV ending, she does not kill him. So it is unknown of what has happened to him. Also, the way she destroys Soul Edge with Soul Calibur is almost the exact the same way Siegfried did in the opening movie of Soulcalibur III.
  • As said, Cassandra is not so humble to the gods as Sophitia. She even goes so far as giving the god Hephaestus the blame for what have happened to Sophitia.
