  • The game is available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
  • Story-wise, the game apparently takes place a short period of time after Soulcalibur III.
  • The story is about a father (Algol) who uses the Soul Edge to become a hero. He ends up killing his own son who has taken the Soul Edge and put it to use for evil purposes."
  • The game will run at 60 frames per second (fps); highest at 720p support.
  • The game is being directed by Katsuoshi Sasaki; the lead programmer is Masaki Hoshino
  • Guest characters are back...
  • Arenas/Stages will now be much larger with less emphasis on ring outs. They will also be more detailed and "interactive"
  • A new and improved Create-A-Soul will be returning, and Create-A-Soul characters can be traded online. Customizations will now affect a character's performance in matches, and players have the option of either playing online using these customization boosts, or having them purely for show.
  • There will be online play.
  • Chronicles of the Sword will not be back, and will be replaced by a new mode called Tower of Lost Souls.
  • "The amount of detail in the game will be amazing! The leather straps on Ivy's thighs make real-time indentations into her skin as she fights."
  • The game is based on the Soulcalibur III engine and was reworked from the ground up for balance reasons.
  • Patching the game is possible if any issues come up with gameplay, but Namco states "We don't intend to make a game that needs to be patched at a later date".
  • The health gauge is going to be changed. There will be a way to beat your opponent that doesn't involve the health gauge or ring outs; it is called a Critical Finisher.
  • No tag-team play, except for certain "Tower of Lost Souls" challenges.
  • In regards to Soulcalibur on the PSP, Namco states: "We're happy to hear that players would like to see Soul Calibur on the PSP, so we'll keep that in mind."
  • The game is based on the design flow of Soulcalibur II, such as the character select area.
  • Soulcalibur IV takes place in Ostrheinsburg, Siegfried's hometown.
  • Soulcalibur IV does not have the button input ending like Soulcalibur III, instead it just has a short sequence, and in the bonus characters' case, their endings are more like the Soulcalibur and Soulcalibur II endings, e.g, pictures.
  • If Soulcalibur is set near 1600, that must mean the Star Wars characters existed around that time as well.
  • Soulcalibur IV does not have Survival or Team Battle or most of the other modes previous Soulcalibur games had.

[edit] Gameplay

[edit] Modes

The fourth Soulcalibur-game features the familiar Story, Arcade, Training and Museum modes. A new mode called Tower of Lost Souls has the player fighting special battles in order to gain rewards.<ref>Namco Bandai Games America</ref>

[edit] Character Creation

The game brings back Character Creation from Soulcalibur III. Choosing your character's clothes won't affect just his or her appearance, but also how he or she behaves in battle. Some pieces of equipment favor offensive and others defensive playstyle. <ref>Soulcalibur IV Hands-On Preview</ref>

[edit] Active Matching Battle

Soulcalibur IV's battles use a different structure from it's predecessors, nicknamed Active Matching Battle (AMB). It allows players to fight multiple opponents at the same time under different circumstances.<ref>Namco Bandai Games America</ref>

[edit] Soul Gauge & Critical Finish

Soulcalibur IV features an all-new Critical Finish system. This time there will be another gauge under the characters' Health Meter, known as the Soul Gauge. This meter will fill up when attacking and decrease when guarding. When the meter is empty, the opponent can do a strike that instantly KO's the opponent, ending the round. There are also three green boxes below the gauges, reflecting the state of the characters armor: high, mid, or low.

If the character manages to empty out the opponent's Soul Gauge again, they will get a short chance to perform a powerful Critical Finisher, which will kill the opponent instantly. Each character has their own personal Critical Finisher. Namco says that they developed the Soul Gauge to decrease the benefits from constant guarding, thus giving the game a faster tempo and making the matches more offensive.<ref>GameSpot: Soulcalibur IV Updated Hands-On</ref>

[edit] Online Battles

For the first time in the series, Soulcalibur IV players have the option of fighting against other players online. Confirmed versus-modes available in online battles are Standard VS (for classic matches) and Special VS (for customized characters). <ref>Namco Bandai Games America</ref> Director Katsutoshi Sasaki has mentioned that created characters are playable in the online multiplayer mode. <ref>Soulcalibur IV Goes Online at 1UP.com</ref> the online is shedule to be 1 on 1 only.
