[edit] Gameplay
[edit] Modes
The fourth Soulcalibur game features the standard Story, Arcade, Training and Museum modes.
[edit] Tower of Lost Souls
This is a single-player mode focused on defeating unique challenges for rewards such as gold or equipment.
[edit] Create-a-Soul
The game brings back Character Creation from Soulcalibur III. Choosing your character's clothes won't affect just his or her appearance, but also how he or she behaves in battle. Each piece of equipment has stats that affect the characters performance in certain modes such as Tower of Lost Souls. The standard characters can also be customized to wear any of the equipment available for Create-a-Soul and the stats of the equipment also affect them.
[edit] Active Matching Battle
Soulcalibur IV's battles use a different structure from it's predecessors, nicknamed Active Matching Battle (AMB). It allows players to fight multiple opponents at the same time under different circumstances. This is present in single-player modes only and will not appear in Versus, Training, or Online modes.
[edit] Soul Gauge & Critical Finish
Soulcalibur IV features an all-new Critical Finish system. This time there will be another gauge under the characters' Health Meter, known as the Soul Gauge. This meter will fill up when attacking and decrease when guarding. When the meter is empty, the opponent can do a strike that instantly KO's the opponent, ending the round. There are also three green boxes below the gauges, reflecting the state of the characters armor: high, mid, or low.
If the character manages to empty out the opponent's Soul Gauge again, they will get a short chance to perform a powerful Critical Finisher, which will defeat the opponent instantly. Each character has their own personal Critical Finisher.
[edit] Online Battles
For the first time in the series, Soulcalibur IV players have the option of fighting against other players online. Versus-modes available in online battles are Standard VS (for classic matches) and Special VS (for customized characters). Every character is available for online modes, including Create-a-Soul characters and costume edits of the main characters.
[edit] Trivia
Thanks to Soulcalibur Universe
- Story-wise, the game apparently takes place a short period of time after Soulcalibur III.
- The game runs at 60 frames per second (fps); highest at 720p support.
- The game is based on the Soulcalibur III engine and was reworked from the ground up for balance reasons.
- The game is based on the design flow of Soulcalibur II, such as the character select area.
- Soulcalibur IV takes place in Ostrheinsburg, Siegfried's hometown.
- Soulcalibur IV does not have the button input ending like Soulcalibur III, instead it just has a short sequence, and in the bonus characters' case, their endings are more like the Soulcalibur and Soulcalibur II endings, e.g, pictures.
