[edit] Eiserne Drossel
![]()
The ring blade of Tira, loyal servant of Nightmare and mistress of the flock of watchers. She has carried this mysterious sword since the time when she was still human, before she became infected by the evil of Soul Edge. It is a weapon unique to the Bird of Passage, an organization of assassins, and indeed it was they who gave it to her. With it, Tira harvested many lives. She killed the targets assigned to her by the organization. She killed her new friends and family who had taken her in when she had nowhere to go.
Now, it is souls that Eiserne Drossel harvests. Offered up in sacrifice to Nightmare-to Soul Edge-these souls are taken from both indiscriminately chosen victims and from those who would dare challenge her master.
[edit] Soul Edge
Tira's Legendary Weapon. In Soulcalibur III, it increased attack pushback force, penetrated the opponent's guard to inflict damage, and increased attack power over time. However, it also drained Tira's health.

[edit] Story
"Prophet!" said I, "thing of evil!‐prophet still, if bird or devil!‐ Whether Tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore..." - "The Raven" Edgar Allan Poe
There was an underground organization that hid in the shadows of the intrigue and war storming throughout Europe. They were affiliated with no single side, forming contracts with the powerful, and sending out assassins to eliminate important figures. The organization kept its existence secret, influencing the history of Europe from behind the scenes. It went by the name of "Bird of Passage."
Tira was an assassin raised by this organization. She was a bird trapped in a cage, stripped of the freedom to choose her own future. Even in her earliest childhood memories, she had already grown accustomed to taking the lives of others. She felt no sorrow, no guilt, nothing. The act of killing had become a regular routine in her life--so much so that she needed to kill on a regular basis for the stimulation it provided.
The young Tira worked to improve her skills. She displayed a cheerful demeanor, as if she enjoyed her job, but even she herself did not realize that this was nothing more than an act to hide the true feelings that lay buried deep in her heart.
When the Evil Seed rained down, Tira was in the middle of a mission. The evil energy burnt the mind of her leader, and the chain of command collapsed. The mission failed. Tira was suddenly set free from the underground world and found herself flying outside on unsteady wings.
She has since forgotten where she was when this event transpired.
For a while, she was taken in by an ordinary family in an ordinary city and lived a life amongst ordinary people. Unlike the world she had come from, there was nothing here to satisfy her desire, but she had casually thought to herself that this life might be okay, too.
However, her modest, peaceful days did not last for long.
The trigger was a simple event. She had set free a bird that the family's child had been keeping as a pet. She wasn't sure herself why she had done it. But the child had burst into tears, and the parents had scolded Tira.
By the time she had realized what was happening, an all-too-familiar sight lay sprawled around her. She was fundamentally different from other people. She could never live peacefully among them.
"I should have known I couldn't live without this..." thought Tira, as she gazed blankly down at her blood-stained hands.
Tira began a life of aimless wandering, taking the lives of others as she went.
It was around this time that the intensity of her emotions grew so much that she could no longer control them. The slightest occurrence would cause her heart to sink, and for her to feel like rejecting everything. Then her mood would improve suddenly, and everything she did would feel tremendously enjoyable.
She grew more and more confused, but she now lacked the will to even concern herself with it.
One day, she came across information about the massacres caused by Nightmare. She had found someone else like herself. Her heart leapt at the thought.
Tracking down the azure knight led her to Ostrheinsburg, where she met a mysterious man with a scythe. What she had really sought was Soul Edge itself. Nightmare was nothing more than a puppet...
Upon hearing this truth from the man, Tira was unable to hide her disappointment. A short time later, however, she heard rumors that the azure knight had reappeared. Following the trail of slaughter, she finally found Nightmare. This being, the physical representation of the cursed sword's will, was an incarnation of destruction and despair far beyond her expectations.
"Finally, someone to whom I can give myself entirely..."
Kneeling before the cursed knight, she opened the most sacred depths of her heart and accepted the dark will into herself...
Now a faithful servant of the evil sword, she operates behind the scenes, controlling a flock of ravens. She has been given two missions.
The spirit sword was driven into Soul Edge's main body, sealing it. Her first task is to destroy the spirit sword and free the evil sword.
Her second task is to locate a new host for the cursed sword. The power of the evil blade is being restrained by Soul Calibur. Soul Edge is controlling a temporary body, but its vessel is far too unstable to be used for long--it needs someone with both the spiritual strength to make full use of Soul Edge, and a body that can readily accept its evil will. Seeking the ultimate host, Tira spreads her dark wings and flies out into the world.
Those who meet with her approval shall surely have their souls burned by the flame of the cursed sword. Those who do not, Tira will surely take their lives to bring to joy to her own.
[edit] Ending
Tira is at Sophitia's house and tries to find a new host for Soul Edge.
[edit] Left Input Ending
Tira finds Sophitia's daughter, Pyrrha, and makes her the new host.
[edit] Right Input Ending
Tira continues to search for Sophitia's daughter, only to be ambushed by Sophitia and Cassandra and chased out the window. There, after escaping the household, Soul Edge decides to possess Tira. Her body and clothes turn purple as Soul Edge speaks through her, saying that her body will have to suffice for now.
[edit] Canon Ending
Tira goes to the Lost Cathedral and ends up affected by the clash of Soul Edge and Soul Calibur
Did you glimpse that black shadow flit across the sky to the west? Turn your back upon it and face the east. Do you see those outstretched wings, black as coal, the dark birds alighting heavily on the ground? They are the watchers, infected servants of the evil sword, and today, too, they beat their ill-omened wings and bring information from around the globe to Ostrheinsburg. There, squatting at the summit of ruined tower! Do you see the solitary woman, her ear cocked toward the cries and caws of her flock? Now, she stands and turns. Yes, it is Tira.
"He is coming! He is coming!" "The fool. That sword cannot save him this time!" She conversed within herself, and a small smile flitted across her face.
The woman whose unstable swirl of emotions maintained her mental balance was gone. She had gone ahead of Nightmare to the Lost Cathedral and waited before the gate. Having already turned to evil-malfested-she had been affected strongly by the destruction unleashed by the meeting of the swords. Hurled into the maelstrom, Tira's mind was torn apart, shattered into countless shards. But the loyalty she felt toward Soul Edge made her cling to life, and her consciousness clawed itself together again. In the end, she became two people, her mind reformed into two separate entities that represented the extremes of the original, unstable Tira. Two consciousnesses. Two awareness. Together, they processed the information that her watchers carried tirelessly to her. With her enormous store of knowledge, she could hand Soul Edge, her king and master, the advantage in the battle that was to come.
Tira knew the time of battle was close, and so she went before her master. The Azure Knight sat on a throne, the cursed sword in his hand. He was now stronger than he had ever been. The roots of the evil were sunk deep into the foundations of the castle and throughout the very land of Ostrheinsburg. Perhaps Soul Edge sensed the coming battle, for there, at the very center of the warped dimension that the evil created, it glowed with a dull light. Before the sight Tira could not help but fall to her knees.
Tira would use the habitants of the cursed city to wear down the power of Soul Calibur. And when at last they fought, the cursed sword would turn Ostrheinsburg into a giant vessel and every soul within that place would be caught within its maw, including the spirit sword. She knew that then her king would win.
And at that moment, Tira, too, would become a part of Soul Edge. A feeling she had never felt before swelled in her. But she-both of her-did not understand it.
"Soul Edge will consume everything. Yes, everything!" "Everything I am is devoted to the service of my king."
A tiny glimmer of fear sparked in the chink between the two personalities of Tira, but she forced it down below the surface of her consciousness. She would not feel it again.

[edit] Trivia
- Tira happens to suffer from the bi-polar disorder. In Soulcalibur III, this can be demonstrated by several things. If you change her costume while in the Character Select screen, she will go from being happy to angry or vice versa. Also, if you listen to her lines in her Character Profile, she says a handful with a happy tone and face, and another handful with an angry tone and face (this continues as you go on) and some fans believed she was possessed.
- Tira is a sub-boss in Soulcalibur III's Tales of Souls Mode for a battle in Osthreinsburg Castle, where she will say the following:
- "Oh, he / she looks really strong. Very strong! I can't wait to see you die; it's going to look incredible!" - "You're not bad, but I don't like the look in your eyes. There's no need for a conscience. I wanna see if you're worthy of that sword. Let's find out!" - "This is completely absurd! How do you manage to even exist? You're annoying, I'll make you disappear forever!" But for Sophitia, Tira will say "Aha ha ha ha! Here she comes! To abandon you're children and travel all this way. you're such a horrible mother. Sheesh!" And for Nightmare, she will say "To cling on to the visage of that man for so long. No... I don't understand. Tell me why. Answer me!"
- The only move in Soulcalibur III where Tira releases grip of the ring blade completely in the Uprising Neb Counter.
- Nightmare plans to devour her soul some day...
- In Soulcalibur III, her Destined Battle is with Yoshimitsu
- Her version of Soul Edge resembles an Ouroboros symbol.
- Eiserne Drossel means "Iron Thrush" in German.
- In Soulcalibur III, her weapon was mistakingly translated as Aiselne Drossel
- In Soulcalibur III, Tira's moveset is available to both the Thief and Assassin classes, making it the only main character moveset available to more than one class.
- Even though she didn't appear until Soulcalibur III, one of the Watchers, the ravens she would later be accompanied by, was shown in the intro to Soulcalibur II delivering a shard of Soul Edge to Nightmare.
- Concept art reveals that Tira was originally going to look like a cat-girl, having her hair shaped like cat ears and gloves that resembled cat claws.
- Early Soulcalibur III footage showed Tira's current mood displayed next to her name during battle. It was probably going to have an affect on gameplay, but was removed. It was brought back for Soulcalibur IV
- Birds seem to be a recurring theme for Tira. Aside from the feathers on her outfit and being accompanied by ravens, most of her moves are named after birds. The organization that raised her was called the Bird of Passage, and releasing her adoptive family's pet bird was what led to triggering her killer instinct.
- To many users and players, Tira seems to resemble a lot like Harley Quiin from Batman either due to her personality and voice being so similar or her second outfit in Soul Calibur 4 where she dresses as a clown.
